"When you make energy efficiency part of your everyday activities, you are reducing energy demand. Reducing demand means that less natural gas, coal and other resources are needed to produce energy. This means less greenhouse gas emissions and cleaner air for all of us and cost savings for you."

GreenYorktown is a local environmental advocacy organization dedicated to the belief that local actions can and do beget universal reactions.  We believe that the time for action to reduce greenhouse gases and slow climate change is immediate. GreenYorktown’s mission is to advocate for sound environmental policy and raise public awareness about climate change.

Yorktown Supervisor and Town Council sign US Mayors Climate Protection Agreeement
at February 19th Board Meeting

February 19, 2008, - GreenYorktown, a residents' environmental advocacy group, applauds the new bold commitment to the fight against climate change made by the supervisor and town board of the Town of Yorktown. On February 19th, Don Peters, Yorktown Town Supervisor, signed the U.S. Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement. Developed by the US Conference of Mayors in 2005, this agreement commits municipalities to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by 7% below their 1990 levels by the year 2012. This agreement has both long term and short term initiatives to guide our town in decreasing our carbon footprint. Yorktown has now joined nearly 800 communities across the United States that have endorsed the Mayors Agreement.

GreenYorktown, with over 50 members, has been reaching out to the Yorktown government, businesses, and individuals. The group has scheduled a transportation forum on February 29 and a recycling forum on March 28, both at 7:00 PM at the Yorktown Town Hall.

"Climate change is truly the elephant in the room," said Patty Peckham, co-chair of GreenYorktown. "We must be willing to make changes, to develop a society where materials last, where conserving counts, where our environment is precious. Our political will must be engaged now and legislators must be courageous in making policy that has a real and immediate impact on climate change."

"By working to make our town more energy efficient, we will be fighting climate change and reducing our tax burden at the same time. We recognize the efforts of town employees who are already working on reducing energy use in town buildings and in our vehicle fleet as well as town and county recycling efforts", said Paul Moskowitz, a member of GreenYorktown.

"We, the residents of Yorktown, fully support our Town Government in these initiatives and welcome "green" town policies that will most certainly evolve. It is wonderful that our town, Yorktown, has taken this initial step towards these goals" said Jerry Robock, co-chair of GreenYorktown.
